What is the Coast RV chassis mounted battery box?
The Coast RV chassis mounted battery box is a metal battery storage box designed to mount underneath a compatible caravan or RV chassis.
It has been developed as a larger upgrade option for customers who need more battery capacity than some older or smaller chassis mounted battery boxes can support. This can be useful for touring setups where more power is required for off grid camping, 12V appliances and extended time away from powered sites.
The unit includes access holes with grommets at both ends for battery cables, a textured front finish to help protect against rock strikes, and a removable front cover secured with Allen key bolts.
What comes in the box?
The main battery box unit includes the outer metal housing, removable front cover, internal adjustable mounting bracket and battery securing strap.
The adjustable mounting bracket helps hold the battery in position once it is fitted inside the box. The securing strap is used to help keep the battery stable after installation.
The front of the box also has a protective plastic film, which can be removed after the unit has been installed.
What hardware do you need?
For installation, you will need three M8 bolts, nuts and washers. If you are replacing an existing battery box, you may already have suitable hardware fitted to the caravan.
You will also need the appropriate spanners or sockets to tighten the mounting bolts. The internal battery retaining bracket is removed and refitted using a 10 mm socket and spanner.
Always check the product instructions and confirm the correct fasteners for your specific installation.
Mounting the battery box to the chassis bracket
Some caravans may already have a chassis mounting bracket fitted during manufacturing. If your van does not have one, compatible brackets may be available separately.
To fit the box, lift the unit into position so the rear bracket on the battery box sits over the chassis mounted bracket. Once the box is sitting in place, move it left or right to line up the most suitable mounting holes for the M8 bolts.
Before tightening the box into position, make sure there is enough clearance in the centre for the lid to be removed and refitted. This is important for future access to the battery.
Once the mounting holes are aligned, fit the bolts, washers and nuts, then tighten them securely with the appropriate tools.
Preparing the box for the battery
Before installing the battery, remove the internal mounting bracket using a 10 mm socket and spanner.
Move the securing strap out of the way so the battery can be lowered into the box cleanly. Once the battery is inside, refit the mounting bracket loosely at the front of the battery.
Before tightening the bracket, pull the securing strap through behind the bracket so it is ready to secure the battery.
Securing the battery
Once the strap is in position, push the mounting flange back against the battery to help hold it securely. Tighten the bracket using the 10 mm spanner and socket.
The battery should sit firmly inside the box and should not be left loose. A secure fit is important because the battery will be exposed to road vibration and movement while travelling.
Connecting the battery cables
After the battery has been secured, the battery cables can be routed through the access holes with grommets at either end of the box.
The video shows the cable access points, but electrical connection should always be handled with care. If you are not confident working with 12V battery systems, speak with a qualified installer, auto electrician or RV service technician.
Correct cable routing, protection, fuse placement and battery system setup are important for safe operation.
Refitting the front cover
Once the battery is fitted and the cables are connected correctly, the front cover can be placed back onto the box.
Secure the cover using the four supplied Allen key bolts. The protective film on the front of the unit can then be removed after installation.
